Kids can disappear on you in the blink of an eye. I never anticipated how easily it can happen until an experience last weekend that scared the daylights out of me. Here’s what happened on the day a drainage plumber saved my baby.

My neighbour was having some problems with a blocked or damaged drain. Because we live in Melbourne, drain repair specialists were able to arrive within a couple of hours of his call. As it turns out, he’d been ignoring the warning signs for ages (sewer smell, moist spots) and the problem grown enormous. The company had to send out a  few guys to tackle the job, which involved searching for the problem with a CCTV camera and then excavating to reach the pipe. I went outside with my three-year-old daughter to take a look and then came back into the house. I don’t know what happened but I guess I didn’t close the screen door properly. ‘Come on,’ I said as I started back for the kitchen, expecting Millie to be following right behind me. It wasn’t until a few minutes later that I noticed the silence and looked around to find her gone.

At first I was slightly nervous as I searched the house calling her name. When I couldn’t find her I started freaking out. I ran outside and couldn’t see her anywhere, so I immediately approached the drain fixers to ask if they’d seen my daughter. They hadn’t but they also told me that one of the guys had gone to the truck around the corner. At that very moment, I saw him crossing the road  holding my daughter’s tiny hand. She had wandered all the way down the street when he’d spotted her and brought her back to me!

I’m so grateful to those guys that if I ever get a blocked drain around Melbourne I’ll surely call them to come and help me. I know it’s weird but after an experience like that they feel like family!
